We should all take note that Al Gore repeated his opinion from his book "earth in the balance" to call upon auto makers to abolish the internal combustion engine in automobiles. Interesting article at CNSNews.com in the enviornment section. I wasn't going to vote for him anyway but that clinches it for me!! Although I'm sure my 2 4bbl 59 runs absolutely clean at all times especially with that draft tube sending the gases to the ground instead of the air. Well, maybe not.

Guess he'll stop flying on the campaign trail, huh
Sign of a true politician, say anything for a vote. Reminds me of Tom Cruise few years ago giving a speech at Earth Day and people complaining about him racing cars. If the car industry hadn't stolen the plans and shot that guy that invented the pill that turned water into gas, somebody would've had time to figure out how to make cars not pollute. Maybe when they finally release the alien technology the government has been withholding from us, we'll have the solutions to all the world's problems- Top

Re: abolish internal combustion engine
Yeh Jeff, but what about ALGORE'S transportation method. Air Force One, 200lbs of fuel burned per mile. On one trip, to and from an overseas destination, BIG AL dumps more polution than all the vintage Corvettes put out in 5 years!

Re: abolish internal combustion engine
Jeff -- You have hit on one of my pet peeves -- bad science in support of "politically correct" programs.
How much money is hidden in the cost of a new car to meet CAFE standards? Just add up the big bucks for each item added primarily in the name of fuel economy -- injectors, computerized control of almost everything, BAH. The savings in gasoline cannot begin to pay for the added cost of the car.
Just this weekend, for "Earth Day", the city of Chicago announced that it would spend $4MM to add solar panels to 10 museums and zoos. Expects to save 50,000 kWhr/yr in each installation. Figure it out -- 50,000 kWhr = 170MMBtu = about $340/year per installation -- or $3400 total annually. But the interest alone, on $4MM is over ten times this amount. BAH.
But, just pass a regulation. Require that cars be run on fuel cells, or some such nonsense. (AND -- I worked on fuel cells for my livelihood for many, many years; ergo, I know whereof I speak.) They cannot be economic -- so just legislate them into existence.
Off my soap box for now. Sorry to get all wound up, but this sort of nonsense aggrevates me. Geezer

Re: Guess he'll stop flying on the campaign trail,
Bob-----
I think you're misunderstanding this. Al's not talking about abolishing HIS car, he's talking about abolishing YOUR car. You see, Presidents, ex-Presidents,or ex-big time politicians will be among the few that TRULY NEED versatile gasoline-powered cars in "future world". He'd like to have it some other way, but the secret service just wouldn't allow it. So, they'll still be a few versatile, gasoline powered cars around. For folks who TRULY NEED them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: SS War Wagons *TL*
Hey Joe have you seen the Secret Service Suburban War Wagons? Armor plate on some of them - all real well equipped. Can not imagine they would get rid of those or the armored limos that are donated to them.
Wonder what they do with the old ones? Would be great urban commute vehicles. Next to Hummer best ride for the expressway to work.
Obligatory Corvette content: Could even tow the Corvette behind for really quick escapes.

Re: SS War Wagons, what happens to them?
The Suburbans aren't armored. They don't really mind if a few Secret Service agents take a bullet. The limos are blown up to keep anyone from finding out any of their "secrets". I am not making this up. I just asked a Secret Service agent.- Top
