      John--
This often happens when an engine is not breathing properly. Guys put non-vented valve covers on 350's with no breather tube on the back and then wonder why the motor is blowing oil out the filler tube or any other possible place. Roy had some decent suggestions to look for--good luck.

        John------

In the simplest of terms, engine wear produces blow-by. Blow-by produces the symptoms you describe. Of course, it can also be caused by the breathing problems that Roy and Mike have described. However, if your crankcase breathing system is in reasonable repair, then the problem is most likely related to blow-by. This is just one of these conditions that is produced by "aging". Analagous conditions are produced in humans as a result of the "aging" process. With a car, you can rebuild it and get everything back to as-new. With a human, you can't.

            Hey Roy:
What exactly is it that an exhaust valve not seating would do to cause this? I don't know why this fascinates me, maybe because my 61 blows oil out the road draft tube at a high rate (but at least the undercarige is preserved ).
            Thanks!
            Jim

I meant the valve in the PVC , like in C2's that some guys add in a C1.
If your blowing oil out the draft tube you too have to much pressure in the engine, usually worn piston rings

call your local gastrointestinal specialist and they'll gladly install a new O ring.

If that o-ring will get me back to my "as new" condition, I'll be down there knocking at that guy's door so quickly it will make your head spin. For that, I don't even care how uncomfortable the installation process might be.

The gastrointestinal specialist I had in mind is..

my neighbor, SHE lives across the street. We've been neighbors for 13 years and in all that time I can never recall turning my back to her.

                      John -

Are you sure it's a 283? Does it have the road draft tube from the vent hole in the back of the block (next to the distributor) down past the starter?
