63 Atwood hood support for FI car.

Got dinged on my hood support at Marlborough because it doesn't have ATwood stamped on it. Does have the 16077 part number on it. I suppose I bought it from Chev around 79 to '81 but don't remember. Now I am studying the 63 hood support info. I have been getting bits and pieces of info. I understand that the last one that Chev sold would not be correct for a '63 to 65. The logo should be stamped on the engine side of the support and the part number on the RH fender side. The washer or washers should be blackened. So to do this you must remove a rivet and then re-rivet the part back together which is something I don't like to do for sure. I understand that the repro hood support may not be correct for a '63 and even if it is I would still want an original.
What are some of the other difference between the early and later midyear hood supports. Saw a repro at a show that had the Atwood stamped into the inner part of the channel. Did originals have Atwood stamped in various locations? Thanks, John

    John,

I have one that has Atwood stamped on the engine side of the support near the hood end. Under Atwood in smaller letters is Rockford, Ill.

i believe paragon has the rivets as well as the unique "sprung" washers.when your 63 gets its Duntov, hope you'll buy and restore a c-1 as your resto posts are challenging. mike

        Comments from a Mar 64 FI build car;

Would like to verify the "Rockford, Ill"
Do not understand the "blackened washer" however. Not in my 63/64 JM (3rd ED) - assume its in the 4th ED. Hope it will not be in 5th ED since a fifth is needed or I need a fifth of something. OH, my support does not have any "blackened washer"

My Mar 64 does not have "blackened washer(s)" Have only been able to trace car to spring 66 - so it is possible a new hood support was put on before the spring of 66. (Only one owner from Mar 64 to spring 66)

John, I have the number, Atwood name and small lettering under Atwood. A prior owner got creative and sprayed it with Cad. paint. Therefore the small lettering is hard to read and the washers are cad. color.

He is a link to Paragon:

Their repair kit is not black, but they have been known to make errors in the past.

John, do NOT get hung up on WHERE

the stampings are - the guy doing that knew that the "Boss" wanted it stamped so that it could be identified.

Loren, Harry, Doc, Allen and others, Thanks for the input on the hood support.
But still missing at least one answer to my feeble question. What is the difference between the 63 style hood support and say a '67 one or the last available hood support from Chevrolet. My hood support works perfect and I hate to touch it but need a "wood" one to keep Carlton and company happy. You know what he is like when he's unhappy. Picks on Jr.
Dr. Mikey, I don't think I will be restoring a solid axle thankyou. Haven't learned enough about a 63 to proceed to a solid one. If I did it would be a carb car as they are rarer than hens teeth. John
Loren, Thanks for the input and letting me your space to address others.

Re: 63 Atwood hood support for FI car.

Harry and Alan, I have been able to establish that there is a strong possibility that the 63-64 hood suppport did NOT have any blackened washers. I also heard from Jorjorian and he confirmed that his original 63 hood support does NOT have blackened washers. CC's manual does NOT say anything about blackened washers either. The judges at Marlborough did NOT say anything about my '63 hood support as far as the washer deal just the missing logo. So it appears that this issue of black washers involves the later hood supports. But no one has supplied any info on say 65, 66, 67 hood supports. For the most part catalogs including Chevrolet have been treating this part as a generic one that applies to all midyears. Maybe it does but I don't think so. Such a simple part and one that needs research. Possibly a good item as part of a seminar if someone is interested. Or an article. Did "The Restorer" ever have such an article. I never checked. Thanks again, John
