1966 Wheel Paint

Hi,

Doing a restoration on a 1966 roadster. What type of paint and what type of finish is to be used on the wheels? Any help would be appreciated.

Bob,

Gloss black. I sand blasted my wheels, primed with Rustoleum clean metal primer and painted with Rustoleum gloss black enamel. Suggest that you purchase the NCRS Judging and Tecnical Manual. All of these details are in the manual.

1966 Wheel Paint

My understanding is the front side of the wheels is gloss black, the back side is semi-gloss black.

Gary,

You are correct. The wheel is first dipped, completely, in semi gloss black. Original wheels almost always have a section that shows where the excess paint ran off the wheel, often leaving a puddle in the outer troughs that are used for wheel balance weights.

The face side of the wheel is then painted gloss black. (or some other body color enamel for some 63 and older cars)
