gas tank above E

I just reinstalled my gas tank and I know it is empty. The gage reads above E. Not a lot but enough that it is incorrect. I have not added gas to see what happens though. What can cause this? I put in a new rear body harness and all the rear lights work great.

Two possibilities, one, the float is not adjusted to provide the proper setting to the resostor when empty, two, the restance in the sending unit is not correct, Three four and five all follow the one question, how well did the system work before it was taken apart, did you check for the same issue before replacing the unit?

Hi Chris

I had problems with my new sending unit. First, I added a second ground. Then I finally had to take the sending unit out and bend the float arm alittle. Now it works right. If your gauge worked right before, then adjusting the float might not be what you need. Try another ground and then if you have to, try adjusting the float.

I do not think I ever had an empty tank AND the needle never went lower than where it is now. So it could be it worked before and there was always that much gas in it. Or I did have little gas and the sender was still at the bottom of it's motion.

So, I will try a temporary ground to see if it fixes it. If not I will pull the sender and see if I can get the gage to read E. Perhaps it is hitting the bottom. Is there a way to adjust the float other than a little bending and guessing?

Hi Chris

As far as I know, the only way to adjust it would be bending the float arm. What I did as was told to me from this forum was first I tried a second ground from the sender to the frame. Then I pulled the sender out with wires connected and turned on the ignition to see where the needle read. I raised the float to check for full reading but making sure the float did not go above the sender mounting flange. Then lowered the float to see the reading for empty.My reading was above the amount of gas I had in the tank. Since I had alittle gas in it,approximately 1 to 2 gallons,I had to compensate for that by bending the arm to give me a more proper reading getting the needle as near empty as I can. My gauge now gives me a full reading when I fill the tank all the way up and when I let the tank go just about empty according to the gauge,it takes pretty much the tanks capacity to fill it. So I feel I have it as close as can be.

Before you add gass, fish through the filler and play with the float a little to check thoes readings. I had simmilar issues on my 61 abd made the adjustment out of the car and added the dedicated ground. It works fine now. On these "newer" cars, is the sender in from the bottom? I need to play with the 70 a bit, I ran it completely empty and could only force in 18 gallons, I think it's supposed to be a 20 gal. tank. When it reads empty I can only force in 14 gallons. I drive them both a lot, and hate stopping for gas, I was looking forward to a 20 gal tank... maybe it's time for a big tank midyear!?!?

I pulled the float fuel sender assembly out and found that when the float arm hit the stop on the bottom it read empty and at the top it read full. Looks like the float was sitting on the bottom of hte tank before the stop. So I tweaked the wire up a bit and put it back in. Read E then. I shorted out the ground to hot and it did not move so it seems to be OK now.

Put in 6 gallons and it reads about 1/3 or so.

Wiring is all brand new and I really cleaned up the tank so there should not have been a ground problem.
