    VIN interpretation

I can't believe the response to my first posting, concerning re-stamping a block. I am impressed by the wealth of knowledge, seemingly at the fingertips of your members. I think I know where I need to sign up!

My 1961 has VIN 100035. I would be interested in any info (build date, etc.) that may be gleaned from it. It's been retrofitted with a 350 and turbo 400 trani. It's a great driver now, and real clean underneath, for never having been restored. I'd like to head towards 'as built' (engine, trani, etc.) not necessarily for judging, but accurate as to build dates, casting codes and numbers.

I'm led to believe it was originally from Texas. Anyone recognize the VIN as a car you owned? I'd love to learn more about it, so I know where to head with the restoration planning.

    Thanks in advance, great organization!

Sorry, I don't know anything about your '61 but it sounds like it has provided much pleasure.

Art, Thanks for your comments. I had reservations when I referred to the "8" as an indicator for an 8 cylinder engine and that's why I constructed that sentence as I did, but that's the way it is stated in the book "Corvette By The Numbers" so I went with it.

I stand corrected that the "800" designation refers to Body Style which in this case is a Convertible (2 Passenger) and the Model; Corvette. I will however back up the Body Style number change-over from 2934 to 800 to the 1958 model year as it is shown in my 1961 Chevrolet P&A Catalog.

John, I supplied Alan Colvin with most of the data for his books Corvette By The Numbers and have found a few errors, all in all he did a very good job considering the mountain of data that he massaged.

As far as the change from 2934 to 800 goes, I haven't done an in-depth search, but the Engineering records that I have on hand show 800 starting in the 1959 MY.
I just did a little more digging in the 1938 to 1969 Chevrolet Body Parts and Accessories Catalog dated Oct 1, 1968 and noticed that it indicates that 2934 stopped at 1957 MY..................however it also DOES NOT show ANY model designation for 1965 thru 1969. My point here is that these type of catalogs cannot be trusted for this type of data.
The data that I generally use for my research is data that was generated WITHIN Engineering and I feel it is much more reliable that the catalog data. Yes, the catalog data was obtained from engineering records, but quite often the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing.
