I have restored my 58 240 horse to basicly a factory correct car but it tends to over heat in hot weather. The fan and fan suroud are correct, I have re-cored the radiatior, and the engine has been over bored 40 thousands. Its ok driving medium speeds, however as the day goes on and the temp. rises outside you can see the temp gauge rise higher, and higher, exp. with higher speeds on the hwy. Hot days in stop and go driving do the same thing.

Re: 58 small block over heating
Bob, I recently had a '57 with an original Harrison radiator, but with a 350 ZZZ crate engine with a 190 degree thermostat, and it overheated just as you described. I installed a 160 degree thermostat and the car could sit in traffic in 90 degree heat and never get hot. Also, in cold weather, I got plenty of heat. I might suggest experimenting with different thermostats, for what's it's worth. Patrick- Top

Re: 58 small block over heating
Bob,
Just a thought, but if your brakes are dragging as in the post above that will not help a marginal cooling system. Might be a good idea to resolve the brake problem and see if that helps the cooling problem.
