C2 harness in metal clip on firewall?

I'm trying to understand the proper routing of my 67 wiring harness across the firewall. My car is an A/C car if that makes a difference, although in this case I don't think the A/C matters.

At the Boston Regional I got a deduction for having the harness looped through clip "A" as shown in the photo below. The 67 AIM shows the harness routed this way in UPC 12, page A8 for the base configuration, and again in UPC C60, page E1 in the A/C section.

I pointed out that the AIM shows the harness routed this way, but the judges told me that original cars were not configured this way. They said that GM would never route the harness through a metal clip for fear of the insulation getting scuffed, leading to the metal clip causing a short circuit. I'm not sure I buy this argument because the harness is routed through other metal clips along the fenders and under the nose. I have two questions I'm hoping to get answered:

    1) For those of you who have known original cars, is the harness routed through this clip?

    2) If the clip is not used for the harness, what is it for? It is clearly a different configuration from clip "B" in the photo, which I know is intended for the hood latch cross cable.

Kevin, looks like a red X in a box to me, but a familiar one none the less.

I would have gotten the lead judge over and argued the point. I believe you are correct on all counts. The clip was/is dipped in rubber just to prevent the chafing. Also, typically the clip edges are slightly radiused and yours is too to further prevent chafing. Wiring passes thru metal clips all over the car

I ran into judges that thought one way and I had to argue my point to get a correction on a couple of items. They are not always correct in their judging.
Judges are volunteers who sometime make mistakes. Good judges are willing to admit a mistake.......and correct it.

Joe, I was watching your car being judged and remember the conversation. Here is a picture of my 66 A/C before restore. Hope this helps. P.S. Nice car!

            We need more input here.

The harness on my '67 is routed through that clip too (as shown in the A.I.M.), and I just dug up one of my Bowtie photos from Hershey '03 that shows the same thing (photo below).

The "steel clip" theory makes no sense - harnesses are in steel clips all over the car, and none of them provide a ground path; they're also in steel clips all over steel cars, which DO provide a ground path.

Same here. My car has never been completley apart.

Can anyone else with a "known original" car tell me whether the harness goes through clip "A" in the photo I posted at the start of this thread? I was hoping for more responses than I got, but so far the consensus view seems to be that the harness should go through this clip.
