    1964 wheel codes

I have a 64 coupe that has been flight judged several years ago by it's previous owner. I am interested in taking it to Galveston this november but I want to acquire a set of steel wheels before it is to be judged. I recently looked in the manual to find information regarding codes and unless I looked in the wrong place, I did not find any! Can someone help!

I believe the 63-64 steel wheels are the same. They should be 15"/5.5", regular steel wheels, not rallys. There is a GM stamp on one of the center raised areas. At the valve stem there are two raised seams or protrusions that are mean't to hold on the hubcaps. I'm glad you are comming to Galveston. There's a link to the Tx. chapter web page, and then on to the Moody Gardens web page where we are holding the regionals and nationals in 2001. See you there. Bob

The wheels for your '64 should be stamped 15 X 5 1/2 K without any spaces. There should also be a round Kelsey Hayes logo stamped about the size of a dime. There is also a date stamp, usually by the 15X51/2K stamp, which is a month digit and a year digit - stamped separately. Keep that in mind with your build date. My September '64 coupe wheels are actually stamped 7 and 3 for July 1963. The 7 is upside down and the 3 is at an angle, definitely two different stamps. Also, all the above stampings vary from wheel to wheel in terms of the strength of the impression. Some are very weak and almost impossible to see. If you need more help, I have some photos areound here some where and I'll email them to you. Good Luck. David

Thanks David and you too, Bob! Was I not seeing the date info in the manual an oversight on my behalf or is that something that might be added in the future! At any rate thanks again, and if anybody knows where a pair are for a mid Dec. build date, please let me know. Happy Easter!

Jack, Bob's answer addresses more the exterior features of the wheel. My post deals moreso with the interior stampings. After thinking about it, the date stamps are rather inconsequential when the tires are mounted. Pay closer attention to Bob's exterior remarks as they are the ones that will get you in trouble with the judges. If you can't find the right steel ones, I'll sacrifice mine in a trade for a set of knock-offs. David

We can't judge it if we can't see it. Otherwise if the tire is on the wheel the stamps are on the inside surface. Even on the rallys, that have date codes by the valve stem, are not judged if the car came with trim rings/hubcaps on the driving wheels. That is the main reason that the spare, which you can see everything, is so important.

Just to clarify one small point. The date code David mentioned has two digits for the year i.e. 63 or 64. It is not uncommon to see the odd wheel where only one of the year digits is legible.

There are a lot of wheeles on 63-64 that are wrong! It is eazy to see look at the inside of the wheel it should be at a 45 deg. angle not flat like 65-66. All the new ones sold are wrong . This angle is eazy to see when they are on the car so it is important. Don't be fooled they are not cheep. Look at the size of the valve stem it should be 3/8 not 1/2''. 62 and early cars had the larger stem. Your hub caps won't fit thees wheeles.
