66 - 67 A.I.R. Diverter Valve

If the diverter valve in the 66 - 67 A.I.R. smog system fails, is it possible that the valve would allow so much air to be pumped into the exhaust manifolds that the engine would not even start, let alone run?

I have a 67 - 390 that will start, run for about 2 - 4 seconds, and then stop and from that point on, will not even fire.

I doubt that your problem is associated with the diverter valve or any other component of the AIR system. However, it's easy enough to check. Simply remove the belt from the AIR pump and plug the vacuum supply to the diverter valve. If this solves your problem, then you'll know that it's the AIR system that's the culprit. If it doesn't, then you'll know that the problem has nothing to do with the AIR system. I think you'll find that it's the latter.

The diverter valve operates off engine vacuum which would not prevent you 390 from starting or stop running. If your engine was running and you removed the vacuum line from the diverter valve it would only discharge air from the pump through the diverter valve muffler. The fresh air pumped to the exhaust manifolds only gives oxygen for cleaner burning. Drip a few drops of gasoline in the carb and see if it starts. First look and verify the carb did not flood out.

Thanks for the responses. This one has become a mystery. I have cleaned the fuel system from the tank to the carb, tried new and rebuilt carbs, tried different coils, checked the plugs and plug wires, check the points and condenser, checked all the wiring going to the distributor, checked the distributor advance, checked the timing, all with the same results. The strange thing is the engine went from running decent to nothing - on it's own. Nothing was changed by me!

wiggle the ingition harness where it plugs into the fuse panel on the engine side of the firewall under the drivers side hood latch. mike

run a jumper wire from the + of the battery to

the + side of the coil and see if it will start. if it does start tracing your wiring to the ignition.
