    Eastwood's "Tank Tone"

    Anyone ever use this stuff?

I bought two cans of it for my 69 and so far I'm not very impressed. I'm not too fond on "plating from a spray bomb" but for the tank I thought it would be okay seeing as you can't see it anyways...but I would like it to be close! Maybe I have a dud because it sprays really dry and drips and it is also quite dull and appears gray which is not at all like the picture in their catalog nor what they say it should look like.

Any suggestions on what to do to restore my tank...it's original(dated 11 19 68) and still good so a repro isn't an option. I just want something that will look close to original in a pic before the body goes on.

    Thanks

Experiment with different spray techniques. I have used it with pretty good results. It will never look like original plating ,however.

What technique do you use. I only have two cans so I can't really afford to experiment with what I have.

I know that it won't look like original plating but from what I have seen of it so far, a spray bomb of "chrome" or bright aluminium from the local parts store would be much closer.

Do you know if the Tank Tone is resistant to fuel once dry or will it soften if fuel is spilled on it?

Greg: RustOleum has a spray paint called "Bright Metallic" and it's very close to bright zinc plating. Used it on one of my tanks and was totally happy.

Well I checked the small area today that I did last night and it didn't look too bad so I sprayed the rest of the tank and it came out okay as far as paint goes. I guess I kinda thought that it would look more like the tank in that ad that has a guy spraying it....guess that was a new tank BEFORE he hit it with the tank tone.

I'll look for some Rustoleum Bright Metallic and see if it is much better. If not, I'll just leave it as is and move on to the next project.

Don't get fuel on the fresh paint. Nothing short of epoxy or urethane can stand up to gas.
