'69 Chambered Exhaust (except Corvette ?)

This TSB describes the cancellation of chambered exhaust as the standard(?) exhaust system on '69 Camaros with Z-28, L-34 and L-78, and '69 SS Chevelles with L-34, L-78 and L-89.

Why was the '69 Corvette with N14 spared ? Was this not also a chambered system ? Was it not as loud ? How did these '69 chambered systems compare in decibels to the N-14 of the '65-67 era ?

And was not the designation of N-11 ('64 thru '68) as "Off Road" exhaust a "nudge-nudge" way of saying GM is not responsible for noise contraventions ?

It became an RPO at the date of this memo and was discontinued as an RPO approximately the first week or two of May 1969.

      Wayne,

The big difference between the Corvette "off road" exhaust system and the chambered system on Camaro and Chevelle is the fact that the Corvette system was offered as an option, properly described as being intended for "off road use", and the chambered system was standard equipment on Camaro/Chevelle, with no warning.

From the date of change, the chambered system became optional instead of standard. That way, Chevrolet was off the hook, so to speak. If the system was ordered by a customer, he was then responsible for any "noise level" problems.

The C3 off road system was almost exactly the same as the C2 system. As far as I know, the only difference was the method/location in which the rear hanger was mounted to the muffler, but there may have been other minor changes in the pipe also.

I still have that same TSB. By the way, almost no one ever had the system changed under warranty because of a noise problem.

Thanks guys; I thought they eliminated completely

and therefore only the very early hipo passenger cars could claim provenance. Should'a hung more around tin cars in my youth.

And for the fact that Corvette never had a problem with the "law" is 'cause their loud systems were always an RPO [buyers fault].

          Mike,

You sort-of know of one - mine! My grandfather took his L/34 Camaro in and
had the system replaced because he was getting harrassed by the cops in the
town where he lived. When I first got that car, I was somewhat confused over
the strange holes in the floor ( under the back seat ). I later learned that
the chambered system hangers were in that location.
