    Air cleaner vent hose

    Hey all,
I just got my car back from the engine rebuild and it pulls like a bull. I havnt been able to figure out what kind of assembly goes from the air cleaner to the vent in the manifold. The hose on the car is about 1" in diameter and the opening in the back of the snorkel air cleaner is only about 1/2". Could anyone tell me what is needed for proper fitment. Thanks
    Charlie

    Charles -

Are you sure you have the correct air cleaner? The tube/elbow in the air cleaner base should be the same diameter as the vent tube from the hole in the back of the block, as the hose that connects the two is straight/constant diameter.

Does the hose wrap around and go to the front of the air cleaner between the two snorkels? The guy that rebuilt the engine said that he thought the piece attached to the intake manifold may be incorrect and that may be causing the size discrepancy. I was also wondering if the cost of the rebuild was fair? the engine was completely done including boring out to .60 over, new cam, pistons, rings, valves, seats, bearings, clutch, belts, engine mounts and resurfaced fly wheel. Also removing, installing and installing rear valence and exhaust(labor only)and detailing the engine compartment. The total was $2975.00. I didnt really price it out but he had always done well for me. He told me that it is difficult to keep it from laying rubber now.

        Charles,

From your description, I'm guessing you have a 63 air cleaner base on your 64? The 63 used a small tube that exited the front of the air cleaner base and pointed forward while the correct 64 style base had a larger tube on the left rear that pointed back toward the rear of the engine and connected to the large crank case tube.

          Michael -

That's what I was thinking - '63 was the first year for full PCV, and was a one-year design, with the oil fill tube connected to the front of the air cleaner with a small tube/hose and the block vent plumbed with an adapter to the rear of the carb baseplate. For '64, the PCV flow was reversed, with the block vent tube connected to the air cleaner base and the oil fill tube plumbed to the side of the carb baseplate. Sounds like a '63 air cleaner, not a '64.
