C3 Painted trim tags

Dumb question, but...when did they start painting the trim tags on the Sharks? I know the 78s were, but is that when they started? I also know the paint doesn't stick too well with certain colors. Does anyone know why they started painting them? Quicker?

At some point -- and I'll let others state when -- the trim tags began to be installed before the paint operation. Early C3s had the trim tag installed after the paint operation.
So it is not really so much that they began to paint the trim tag, but more a change in the timing of the installation of the tag.

I touched on this in a recent article published in the Restorer this past winter having to do with buildsheets. The link will take you to a pdf file...look at the last page, left column. Once assembly operations moved to the Bowling Green plant...trim tags were installed after paint operations and therefore BG built Corvettes should have no paint. Ironically, 81 painted do show up on the judging field...but these check out to be St Louis built cars...caught one this past year.
