Both speedometer and tachometer very erratic. Is there something I can try to lube them with without having to remove them? If so what? Thanks Don Ross

Don,If you feel you must lubricate,do it from the bottom. In other words, at the trans or the generator.Go, to automotive store ,they have speedo cable lube that will work. But, first, make sure that the cables have nothing but smooth radius and turns. When you do lubricate the cable use very little lube you don't want the lube to go into the instrument and gum up the works.Just make sure the cable has no kinks in it first.- Top

Re: 1960 Speedometer and tachometer erratic
Don,
Dave offers good advice, however should that trick fail, to answer your question in a word...No. The input shaft of the speedo and tach have a bushing that was "lifetime" lubricated, if you believe that I have a nice bridge... Well anyway, each unit has a small felt wick hidden behind a tin plug which dry out. The best way to describe them is a miniature freeze plug about 3/16 dia. This plug must be removed to get to the wick, unfortunately you have to stick it with a sharp object to pop it out, destroying the plug. You can see them if you are a contortionist, but I don't know any way to service them without the old R & R. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....Best Regards from Connecticut, Mark- Top
