    1964 Battery

My "Restoration Battery" died, and I had heard they didn't last long. I dont want to worry about acid and short life so I am going modern with a fake top. I want to use a fake tar topper battery top, its a great fake with a maintenance free battery that will allow me to have the battery posts in the original position to be used with the topper and also to use my J bolt sand battery hold down setup. I am not so concerned on brand but after several trips to the auto parts store I am having a problem find a FLAT top battery, no caps in the way with proper post position....most have caps that stick up , posts down the centerline, and some have boat battery style additional posts............SO HERE IS THE QUESTION, has anyone found a battery that works with a fake Delco tar topper and with original hardware...make and model and where you bought it ...thanks so much. PS it has to start the car to LOL

Dino, What about the maintenance free battery from Restoration Battery that has the fake caps and looks like the real deal except the top is hard plastic instead of tar. They aren't cheap but I understand that a lot of the boys are buying them. You don't have to worry about acid bubbling out. Look in "The Driveline". I had the same brainstorm as you but vetoed it. How much does the fake cover cost? John

John the topper was free from a friend. The cinci battery at $235 is expensive but what worries me is the life, I have not had luck with longevity of their batteries, can anyone comment on their maintenance free battery...There has to be an aftermarket battery that is maintenance free that is group 24 size and has the terminals in the right spot...I am sure that one of our fellow members has already found it!

The AC-Delco model # 24-7YR is what you're looking for - Group 24, flat top, maintenance-free, terminals in the right places, and the "Topper" will fit on it; I have one in my '67.

Dino, If you are not going to show the car just use a new Delco battery. Even if you are showing it the point hit for that bat is 50% off. Battery is a heavy 25 so you lost 12 or 13 points. Use a new repro and you loose 20% or 5 points. New repros are plastic tops. There are only a few companies left that make all the new batteries but a thousand different names go on them. I do agree with you that someone must have a sealed flat top black battery besides Delco. Just used an old tar top in my '63. You know you can get your old tar top rebuild by using the case over and putting in maintenance free guts. For info on that see my friend Tom Barr in AZ at barrhere@aol.com Someone north of Pittsburgh PA does that for Tom and others. Price is right also. I saw one they did for Tom and it was first class. Sorry I forgot to mention that before. John
