Why do some mid yr vin tags have dd & some dont?

Hello all, have read the ncrs book on trim tags and have been cheking myself by loooking at lots of them at the shows. Along the way I have noticed a number of vin tags on mid years have dd appearing above the serial number and yet many others dont, can anyone explain why?
    Thanks in advance...

    Tony,

Starting in either 64 or 65, the VIN tag had the "DD" (delivery date) stamped into it. Part of new car prep was to include the additional hand stamp of the delivery date. This was to be done by the man that actually performed the prep. Most were crudly stamped, double stamped or even had one character stamped upside down. Most new cars in this era never received the date stamp though. I believe this practice ended at the end of the 67 model year but I'm not sure.
