    C2 shifts hard

I have the original Muncie 4 sheep transmission in my C2. The shifting is tight and is difficult to get inton reverse. Is there anything wrong with this and/or can it be fixed? As always thank you fro your input!

The clutch may be dragging. Check the freeplay. It may be excessive. I believe the spec is one inch with the clutch linkage set at the standard ratio and about three-quarter inch with the linkage set at the "fast" ratio.

John-I had the same problem last year with the Muncie in my C-3. First, I would make sure the shifter and clutch are adjusted correctly. My transmission had some miles on it anyway so I removed and rebuilt it. What I found inside convinced me I did the right thing. I found the shifter forks a little worn and sludgey congealed gear lube. Upon disassembly of the main shaft and gear set I found the same sludgey old gear lube under the sliders. After a thorough cleaning and replacement of bearings, shift forks and assorted small parts the transmission shifts smoothly. The GM Overhaul Manual walks you through the process nicely. Good Luck!

Chuck, Did the rebuilding of your Muncie require any special tools and did you find the job fairly straightforward? I have opened mine up and I see it needs syncro's, and at least one new shift fork.

        Thanks, Scott Marzahl

Scot-I had access to a press for disassembly and reassembly but found no problem during the disassembly as far as parts being excessively tight. During the reassembly a press would make it easier. For reinstallation of the"cluster" your would need a dowell the length cluster and slightly smaller in diameter than the cluster shaft.I made a "dummy" shaft out of mild steel but I can remember people using wooden dowels in my younger days (teenage). I feel if your have average mechanical skills you can rebuild your muncie. I enjoy working on my car as much as driving it so a project like this is fun to me. Scot-Good luck.
