C2: minor details on steering linkage finishes

    Hello All:

I am detailing the steering linkage on my 67, and I have some questions about the proper finishes on a few items:

    1) I know that the steering knuckle (the forged part that spans between the ball joints and includes the wheel spindle) is a natural finish, and the tie rods and tie rod ends are black, but what is the correct finish for the arm that connects the tie rod end to the knuckle? This arm bolts to the knuckle with two bolts.

    2) I believe the lower portion of the knuckle was dipped in red/orange paint as some sort of inspection marking. Can I use some Chevy Engine Orange for this or should I use something more reddish?

    3) Are the nuts and washers on the ball joints and the tie rod ends a natural finish or cadmium?

Sorry for asking questions about such minor items, but I have everything apart right now and I would prefer to just do it right the first time.

Joe. The entire steering linkage assembly is painted semi gloss black as a unit. There is orange paint on one of my spindles but not both. It does not cover the entire spindle though. It was heavily painted and shows obvious drips of orange paint. My original knuckles are bare forged metal with a yellow inspection daub on them. I'll send you a photo if you wish. I copied the original paint as I documented it through my restoration process.

The nuts and washers on my ball joints are cad clear.
If you need any photos, I have an extensive photo library of my documentation process, including how the parts looked as I cleaned them before disassembly.

      Joe,

I used a chassis restoration kit from Quanta, which included pictures(diagrams) showing the location of known, original paint marks, stencils, inspection marks, etc. and included all the materials to duplicate them.
