    Oil filter adapter??

Hey, I know this may sound like a stupid question but...is there suposed to be an gasket between the oil filter adapter and the block? I always thought it was a machine fit?? Terry

    Terry-----

Assuming that you're talking about the 68-82 adapter, there is NO gasket between the adapter and the block----it's "metal-to-metal".

        What oil filter adaptor?
I do not have an adaptor on my 68 smallblock?
I never heard about adaptors for 68s before. I thought this only applied to earlier year cars so that they could be adapted to use spin on filters.
Is this something used on big blocks only?
        Someone educate me please.
        Thanks,
        Kurt

it is the aluminum casting that bolts to the

block that contains the oil filter bypass valve and the threaded extension the oil filter screws on to. it is used on both SBC and BBC. casting # 3952302

Yup, that's it. The official GM terminology for this piece is ADAPTER. Curiously, the "equivalent" piece for 1956-67 engines was, in official GM parlance, referred to as a VALVE. BOTH the 56-67 and 68+ pieces do contain a bypass valve.

The GM #3952301 (casting 3952302, as clem mentions) adapter (or its predecessor piece GM #3916328 used for 1968-only) were used for ALL 1968-91 Corvette engines, small block and big block alike, with ONE exception. The exception? 1969 with ZL-1.
