Removing glass from mirror on C2

Guys,
It seems my outside mirror has correctly dated glass inside an incorrect, non-bowtie mirror frame. I'm thinking of keeping the glass and inserting it into a correct bowtie frame.

It appears the glass is held in with some sort of a ring on the outside. Do you
"pinch" the gap of the ring together in order to remove the glass from the frame or is there some other way?? Any tips or advice on getting the glass out would be greatly appreciated.

Brian, I have done this many times in the past. I use a tool like an ice pick but on a small scale. Insert the sharp end of the tool between the ring ends. Carefully try to lift one end of the ring up and out from around the edge of the mirror. Once you are able to get the one end out the rest of the ring should follow. the ring applies spring tension against the edge of the mirror and simply needs to be spread alittle and lifted out. Don.

There are three springs behind the glass that maintain tension between the glass and the retaining ring; push in on the glass slightly to reduce tension on the ring to simplify removal.

What year is your car? Later '67's have no bowtie on the outside mirror.

Brian, I believe in the current issue of Corvette Enthusiasts there is an article on removing the glass of your mirror and repeening the loose rivets to keep the mirror from flopping around. Hope I have the right mag if not I am sure someone has seen the article and can post a response. On the '67 no bowtie mirror something interesting is that the bowtie logo is on the inside behind the glass. Someone stayed up all night to figure that one out. John

Are you saying that its not as simple as popping that ring back into place once its removed?

Brian, I was only saying that there is a current article on repairing a '67 mirror.Thought the article would be of interest to you and the readers. I do believe it is the current issue of Corvette Enthus. that came a couple of days ago. But you are correct. It's just a simple matter of removing the snap ring and taking the glass out and being careful you don't loose one of the 3 springs. I did it years ago and it was rather easy. John

Ok thanks, I will check out that article. BTW my car is a 66 so it should have the bowtie according to the judging manual. The question is why would someone have taken correctly dated glass and placed it in the wrong frame??

Did they use this same style mirror without the bowtie but with a dated glass on other cars in 63-67?

Brian, It's not another Corvair part if that's what you are saying. My '63 has the long base mirror that was used on other Chev passenger cars. But I never heard of a late '63 to 67 mirror being used on anything but a Corvette. Mirrors are not my forte but if you have a 67 mirror with a 66 dated glass it's not a typical set up. Wait for an answer for a more knowledgeable person for your question. Good luck, John

It helps to pull the mirror assembly off and work on a horizontal surface so the springs don't go all over the place. Also see the Fall 2005 Restorer.

Also watch out that some of the repro bowtie frames (the cheap ones), don't have the ring and have the glass glued in.
