Roy,
It's basically the same stuff (dessicant) you find in little bags when you purchase something made from leather. Manufacturers put them in to prevent moisture and mildew usually from high humidity levels during shipping. Oh yes, you'll also find them in many photographic products. Chevrolet used them to prevent the rear license plate plexiglass from fogging up in humid climates.

Behind the rear license there is
a couple of large holes and four small ones,the small are for the machine screws and the large ones vent the box into the license plate. I have no bags of dessicant in mine, but there's no way to tell, and I don't get condensation. 'Course, I don't drive in the pouring rain, either.- Top

Really clean looking engine compartment! My '57 doesn't have a desicant box, so it was a new item to me. I am still learning little things about the 53-55's.
