    sm&k in Restorer

After the letters "PV" in the latest Restorer mag. there is a small"k". After the words "Top Flight" there is a small"sm". I was wondering what they mean... Bob

    Re: sm&k in Restorer

    Glad you asked Bob.

SM = service mark. It is NCRS' way of saying we own the terms Top Flight, Second Flight, Third Flight and Performance Verification. The aim is to keep other folks from putting on car shows and calling their awards by those names.

The K is the fault of the computer. MSWord does not understand the code for SM and prints the K instead (Thank you Bill Gates). I'll have to watch for that in the future or switch exclusively to Word Perfect. Now if only I could convince the rest of the world of the wisdom of using that program. It should have been SM.

On the other hand the possibilities for the acronym SMK are intriguing. Better than NCRS even.

Terry, Just got my new Corvette Fever. Article about NCRS awards in there. The service mark sign is shown after the Founders,NCRS Flight Award, PV, McLellan. No mark after Bowtie, Folz Memmorial, and Duntov Mark of Excellence. Also, why wouldn't they all be copyrighted like the Bloomington Gold, Survivor,Benchmark, etc? Also Goduti's 71 LT-1 on pg.29 later, Bob

        Bob,

Let me try to explain what we have done. Any award that includes a Name or Sir names is not registerable because the inidvidual grants permission to use his name. As a result the Duntov, McLellan, Folz awards do not need the service mark as we have bewen granted the right to use those names by the individuals. The term Bowtie belongs to Chevrolet so it is not registerable by us therefore there is no service mark registration with it. The end product of what you are seeing will be a copyright of those terms. This is merely the first step in the process.
