'68 P/S Pulley and oil pan

    1. Converting my 327/350 over to p/s I procured the correct add on crank pulley but it does not match up to the crank pulley. There is a gap between the two pulleys of approx 3/16 inch. Is this correct? Do I just tighten all the bolts to remove gap? 2.Had to remove the 6qt trap door oil pan to install p/s. When I pulled out the original oil pan from the attic it was painted black from the factory. Is this the correct color? No mention of oil pan color in JM. Do I have the wrong oil pan?

The correct front crankshaft pulley for your application is GM #3751232. If that's the pulley that you have, it's the correct one. This pulley does fit rather snugly to the rear pulley when it is properly installed. In that regard, please not that there are two round locating fixtures on this pulley. These are supposed to index with similar fixtures on the rear pulley. The failure to align these fixtures is probably what's "holding off" your pulley from seating properly.

As far as the oil pan goes, all oil pans installed on Corvette engines during the 1955-1976 period were painted Chevrolet orange at the time that the engine was painted. So, if the pan you have came off of an original engine, it should have been painted Chevrolet orange. Some SERVICE replacement pans were painted black, but I don't recall ever seeing any of the "5 quart" 63-74 pans, GM #3820000 or #360866 ever so-painted out-of-the-box. Usually, they were bare steel.

Joe, May be I have the wrong crank pulley 3858533BJ? The back side of the 232 pulley grove hits the front side of the crank pulley grove before the locating fixtures mate.

The correct original crankshaft pulley for your car without power steering is GM #3858533. So, you have the pulley that your engine should have been originally supplied with.

For 1967 Corvettes with L-79 AND power steering, the correct rear crankshaft pulley is GM #3850838. Unfortunately, this pulley is long-since GM discontinued.

However, I'm a little surprised that your 3858533 pulley will not properly index with your 3751232 pulley. The 3858533 pulley was, for sure, used with other applications that also used the 3751232 front pulley. So, whether it's the correct combination or not for your car, I don't understand why the two will not properly index and seat.

          Mike ~

The correct oil pan for your '68 should have the drain plug in the rear...
