C2 fuel pump

Here's another question for the C2 crowd:

I need a fuel pump for my 1966 small block 327/300. The most current 1966 NCRS judging manual says the part number for the base engine fuel pump should be 5594657, with 4657 stamped on the flange. I recently spoke to a reputable parts distributor who told me that NCRS judges are starting to think that all 1966 small blocks actually came with a fuel pump bearing part number 6440083. 40083 is stamped on the flange. The manual says that's correct for the L79 (327/350). Does anyone know if 4657 is still correct for a 1966 327/300, or is it now 40083? Also, what's the average price for both fuel pumps in rebuilt, ready to go condition? Thanks for your help.

Personally, and notwithstanding what it might say in the AIM and the NCRS JG, I think that the 40083 probably was used for all 1966's with 327. However, you'll need to use whatever it says in the JG until the manual is revised to provide for the other usage.

A rebuilt version of an original core for either pump will cost you about $200.

However, you can purchase a brand new 40083 from Delco dealers under AC 40083 or from GM dealers under GM #6415325. The new pump will lack the "AC" logo on the upper body of the pump and it won't have the stamped AC ID number. But, it will otherwise be very close to the original and it will be NEW. Although these screw type pumps do lend themselves much better to rebuilding than later crimped type pumps, a NEW pump is usually always better than a rebuild. Expect to be able to buy one for about 30 bucks. A new pump of close to original configuration for 30 bucks versus a rebuild with a few additional nuances of original detail for 200 bucks. You decide for yourself. I know how I'd decide.
