62 dipstick painted black?

I just wanted to verify is the dipstick handle black and the tube unpainted steel? thnx

Mine is all unpainted steel. (340 hp motor)

I'm certainly no 62 expert but I'll bet at least the dipstick handle was painted black. Most likely the tube was painted black also.

If either of these parts were purchased new from Chevrolet years after 62 production, they would have arrived unpainted. The tube would be natural and the dipstick would have been plated a medium/dark grey.

I'm sure we'll hear from others on this issue.

My friend recently bought his original '62 FI dipstick to the house to show it to me and we compared it to a '63. The stick was painted black for sure. The usual medium gloss black. The early '63's were black also. I believe the '62 didn't have ENGINE OIL embossed on it but would have to look back at my notes. The '63 has ENGINE OIL l FULL l ADD l It's not a one but a verticle impression. Just remembered that the '62 FI dipstick only had two words on the bottom. John

Judging manual--61-62 (I believe is correct--no reason not to believe so and I've owned 28 62's over the years): tube--natural. Dipstick--black.
