Wayne
Your right about wishing it never was talked about. But if it did happen the body's were already made BB or SB so when it hit the floor and they did add the BB hood the holes wood still be there ? Why change or fill the inner panel?
OK! If I or my Son ever sells this dam Corvette we'll be sure not to sell it to a NCRS member and hopefully it will never be seen again, I'll never show it again, so lets drop it and say it never happened..- Top

I'd show it in Sportsman class
That's what I do with my unrestored crusty L89 . It may not be as pretty and shiny as the other cars on the field but it's real, it's documented, I can drive it without getting stressed over a paint chip, AND IT'S ALL MINE! By the way, 6500 RPM sounds even better now than it did 20 years ago. Enjoy your car (as I know you do) they were meant to be driven!

Re: E-bay Car
As I do with all of these cars that show up, I asked the hard questions. The e-bay seller sent me some pictures and quoted Nolands book as the only support for the hood placement on this car. The pictures are not great and not complete, but do show some interesting things. One, the hood is not a factory installed hood. Secondly, the RH inner-fender has been replaced. It doesnt have the holes drilled, but it also aint the one that came on the car. So, Another one bites the dust.- Top

Re: Heck, I'd buy it! I think the VIN's really coo
My 68 427/435 car has "435" written in a few places on the body. It was the sequence number, I guess. Maybe I should play that number tomorrow.

Re: Another SB with BB hood on eBay Alan
You're exactly right Wayne. Just after the entire front end assy was fitted to the cab, the hood was installed. It was one of the very next steps in the body assy process.
The hood reinf would have been riveted to the skirt a few minutes before the skirt became part of the front end. Hood support reinforcement plate holes would have been drilled at that time. It was all a matter of minutes, not hours.
From the time the holes were drilled in the skirt to the time the entire nose was installed, including the hood, only about 20 minutes would have passed.- Top

Re: Another SB with BB hood on eBay Alan
Thanks, Michael
I knew it was a short time. I didnt know it was that short. Certainly the tow truck driver that ran over the entire SB hood supply would have been found out by then and a new supply found. The interesting part of all this to me, is that many of the cars that are presented as being BB equipped are AOS bodies.( Roys included) This seems odd since there were few or no AOS BB cars and you wouldnt expect to find BB hoods on that line.- Top

Re: Another SB with BB hood on eBay Alan
Wayne,
Yes, it's hard to imagine how fast these cars were assembled, even though they moved VARY slowly down the assy line. Things that take hours in the field were done in a matter of a few minutes on the line.
What's even more difficult to imagine is the precise order in which all the pieces came together, especially when we think about all the different combinations of assembly there would be, depending on the particular options a car was to be assembled with. Everyone along the line, from the very beginning, knew exactly what the car was to be as a finished product.
That's why the man that drills the holes in the fender skirt knew well in advance which skirt to drill, small block or big block.
But the most difficult to imaging is that, suddenly, someone happened to notice that there were only a few small block hoods left in the pile.
I suppose there could have been several legit reasons why the supply could have been held up, including complete equipment failures at the Smith facility, or a rail strike which would have held up shipping, but it's not likely that any of these reasons would have held shipments for the entire week, as was supposedly the case.
Either way, if there really was a shortage of hoods, and if big block hoods really were used for a week in production, they would have been installed just exactly like they were on a big block car, including the riveted in place LH support reinforcement and the lack of holes in the RH skirt for a RH reinforcement.- Top

Yup, I agree Roy. I think everyone has had way more than enough of this hood debate in the last 15 years. I promise I'll never bring it up again.- Top
