    Apparent Overheating Revisited

On Monday, I started a thread on the overheating of my 1970 LS-5. All the mechanical parts seem to be in good working order. The one part I have not checked is the radiator cap but I will get to that tomorrow (I've been under the weather for the past couple of days). If the problem persists after I confirm the proper operation of the cap, I believe that the problem is electical. Something electrical seams to be going on in my car.

    1) The TCS relay that I replaced with an NOS relay worked for only a short period. Then (in the midst of the overheating "problem" it quit working which leads me to further believe that there is an electrical gremlin at work.

    2) The temperature indication could very well be electrical as you all know. I will try to attack the electrical connections with contact cleaner at all the appropriate connections.

    Now my questions:

What would cause the TCS relay to die within 10 minutes of installation? Is there any test I can do with a digital volt-ohm meter or do I need something more high tech like an oscilloscope/other device?

Is there a booklet that specifically addresses the 1970 (or like years)electrical system in more detail than the diagrams that are contained in the Haynes manual and CSM. Anything available with more detail on troubleshooting this electrical system? How about technical information on the relay itself? I am trying to get a hold of more relays but I need to resolve this problem without blowing more relays!!!

Well, enough questions for now. I have to get some rest to recoupe from this head cold and get ready for tomorrow's troubleshooting. Any help or recommendations are always appreciated.

    Re: Apparent Overheating Revisited

Tony, If you have access to an infrared thermometer (temp gun) it would tell you very quickly if you have a gauge problem or an actual overheat condition. I used one on my 61, and found that aiming it at the thermostat housing gave me the most believeable reading. I'm guesing it was a few(maybe 5?) degrees less than coolant temp. I had a 71 LS5 back when it was new, but all I can remember about the TCS switch was bypassing it! Good luck.

        Re: Update

I should also mention that before I put the old cap back on, I filled the aluminum expansion tank as the engine reached normal operating temperature as I had before when installing the new cap. This time, after turning off the engine following a 6-7 mile drive, no coolant overflowed the expansion tank as previously observed with the new RC-26 cap.

          Re: Update

          Hi Again Tony:

For some reason these caps seem to be one of the more fault prone reproduction parts around, I have returned many.

Hope this is the entire source of your cooling problem.

            Re: Update

Yes, I hope that this is my whole source of overheating problem too!! The cap is the current GM cap from a GM (Chevy) dealer.
