    66 427/390 heat riser.

The counterweight on my 66 big block heat riser, which is located in the passenger side manifold between the engine and the passenger side fender, moves from the engine side to the passenger side. The spring tension keeps the counterweight towards the engine when cold....I presume this is the closed position. Could someone knowledgeable in this area please confirm. The heat riser is correctly positioned towards the front of the car. Thanks.

    Sounds OK to me

Rick -- just checked my 396, and it's as you described. When cold, the spring is strong enough to keep the weight up and horizontal (facing the block). When hot, the spring relaxes and gravity allows the weight to arc downward, opening up the butterfly valve in the process. The heat riser valve is installed so that the weight and spring are facing forward.
