Ahh, so the special flat washer with its raised edges does belong there. I'll put it on after the show today. Thanks again for helping out with my "one-year-wonder"

Re: 68 Steering column prob HELP
What to you mean by raised edges. The only washer I have seen under the nut at the top of the column is a simple washer that is extra thick. It us unusual in that it is thick (plate washer) and it is somewhat small in diameter relative to the hole diameter. That is about it. Hope that is what you have. If you get a chance, send me a picture of it to tfringo@aol.com. Thanks, Terry- Top

Re: 68 Steering column prob HELP
I am not sure that I understand all the ins and outs of the steering column but I have a '68 and the steering wheel hub was rubbing the turn signal switch. The problem was diagnosed as worn steering column bearings. My car has a lot more miles than yours but I was not sure whether your issue was a front to back spacing problem or if the switch was rubbing on its outer edge (in which case it might be the bearings).- Top

Re: 68 Steering column prob HELP
Thanks for the responses. Terry, the washer is as you described. Except it has what I'll call a step in it. Hard to describe. I will post a pic. Sort of looks like it was put into a press and the center half of the diameter was depressed. So it will have the opposite look when flipped over? Good tip regarding the worn bearing Mike. It looks ok and is tight. I repacked it with grease and it seems right. Its all together and the gap looks great, just need the washer under the nut reinstalled and that wave washer under the thrust washer. I like it to be right espically the the steering wheel!
Car show went well yesterday, exceptional weather. My son had his nut/bolt restored 68 442, my friend and wife had their 55 Belare and I was between both. Dont they both take a trophy. So now I'm known as the thorn among the roses, not! More like the rose among the thorns. Previous owner had some pin striping and graphics applied to the car. Everything was able to be removed/rubbed out except a small rose on the nose, its under the clear coat. Hense the humor. Doesnt get much better than a field full of vintage cars and people!- Top
