    Headlight bucket alignment

I took off the front grill and heaqdlight bucket covers and can see that there is a bigger space on the shaft on the side of the motor. It also seeems to have a lot of play. Any advice would be appreciated on how to get to that area to see what the problem is and, what might be the problem.

Study your AIM SHT A3. It shows the parts breakdown of that area and you'll see a locking collar on the outboard shaft and the wishbone collar on the inboard shaft. These 2 items set the side to side adjustment of the bucket.
You need to "stand on your head" to adjust.....but it is possible....

        Charles,

They are a pain in the neck to adjust because of the working position, but the side to side movement is adjusted as Steve says. Pulling the hood makes the work a little easier especially if you have to pull the whole light pod.

Do your lights go up and down easy, and stay in position solid position when up. If not, take a good look at the pivot shafts which attach to the light pod. Mine developed a crack on the inner shaft between the shaft and the die cast piece which attaches to the pod. I could never get it adjusted and keep it from moving until I replaced the shaft with a repro from Paragon.

They also make some rebuild kits for the pivot points.

Welcome to the world of repair and restoration. Have fun.

Thanks Jerry. The headlight does open and close, there is some side to side play but not a real lot. How did you remove the headlight bucket to change the shaft?

            Charles,

You would be better off getting a service manual and review the procedures and assembly drawing. It is a fairly lengthy procedure to pull the headlight bucket.

You'll need to pull the headlight motor first, which is an operation in itself to someone who has newer done it before. You don't necessarily need to remove the hood to remove the headlight motor, but it does make it easier. To remove the bucket you should remove the hood.

Maybe all you need is an adjustment. The bucket adjusts in 3 ways, the swing to the up and down positions, the position up and down, and side to side. It is best to adjust the bucket position with the headlight motor removed.

You might want to try the adjustment first before you pull the bucket, that might solve your problem. But while you are in there, really inspect the condition of the pivot shafts.

              Charles,

I adjusted the gap on my '66 without removing anything. It was VERY time consuming. I actually had to use a mirror to put the wrench on the bolt on the inner "Y" shaped retainer. With the grill off it shouldn't be too bad. I kept the bucket centered with some cardboard in the left and right gaps, then loosend the allen head screw on the outboard collar and the bolt on the inner "Y" shaped retainer. Make sure you slide them both firmly inwards before retightening them, or the gap will change after you rotate the bucket a couple of times.
