I R Gun useage

Hi all, Where does one aim the IRgun to get the best reading? I have shot the lower hose, upper hose near the radiator and near the thermostat. Fun to play with, but trying to check my guage.

Aim it at the thermostat housing. That way you'll know what your thermostat sees and reacts to.

In addition, I aim my IR gun at the upper and middle of the radiator to compare the readings. I noticed my 72 was running almost to the 200 mark yesterday while driving. My IR gun confirmed that the thermostat housing is only showing about 185-190 and the radiator is showing almost a 20 degree drop.

Aim it at the upper radiator hose, just above the thermostat housing - that's a matte surface and will give a more accurate reading than aiming it at the housing; reflective surfaces will result in an inaccurate reading.

If you are checking your gauge, try aiming around the temp sending unit.
