What's the best way to remove old paint? My buddy is redoing his 78 and he says his paintshop buddy knows of a new method using an orbital sander with a special type of paper. I think he's loco. I was sure the only way was the messy way. Using a type of acid based solution to dissolve the old paint. I'd sure appreciate some info on the best method, types of dissolvers used etc. as I plan on redoing my 72 in the near future as well. Thanks again guys.

Re: new paint removal method?
There is a "new" way of removing paint involving baking soda. It is a form of media blasting that removes the paint and doesn't hurt any of the moldings and so forth. I recently had the paint removed on one of my midyears with plastic media blasting and it worked wonderful. Only bad thing that I experienced was the plastic pellits get all over Hell! I will be restoring my 63 this fall and will probably use the baking soda technique. I think both processes cost about $400.00. Cheaper than a new/used set of lungs and alot less messy!- Top

Re: new paint removal method?
John,
Just a side note, but I remember reading or seeing something not too long ago regarding the baking soda technique. It seems that it was excellent as you had mentioned, but there was one caution. The caution had to do with "washing" or clean-up and to make absolutely sure all baking soda was gone from any cracks, crevises, edges, ledges, lips, door jambs, etc. It seems that if not, the watered down baking soda will harden and is then very difficult to remove anytime after. Re: new paint removal method?
Brent, if in doubt call on the experts that make a living doing it. County Corvette does complete off body restorations and are professions at corvette body work.Look them up on the web,www.countycorvette.com. Get their phone number and call if necessary. That orbit systsem could very well ruin the body lines and effect the cars good looks.Good Luck.GRR#33570- Top

Re: new paint removal method?
Brent,
I would not recommend chemical stripping, if you happen to leave it on too long it will eat thru the gelcoat !!! Media blasting is the way to go, it removes everything down to the gray primer which is the last surface before the gelcoat. In the Detroit area, Strip-It on Groesbeck Hwy. in Fraser does an excellent job.
