    Happy Birthday Duke

In celebration of Duke's birthday, below is a picture of Mr Williams with his first car purchase. Nice white socks. Mike, now you have to show yours now.

    Re: Happy Birthday Duke

Ok, but this is REALLY embarrassing. I should have kept my mouth shut, again, but a deal is a deal. Mikey with 1st soon to be wife, April 1964 and the 4 month old coupe. And no, I have no explanation for the hair.

        Re: Notice

Even while taking the picture, Duke couldn't keep his hands off the car?

Much to our benefit now, I'm glad.

Yes, I still own the car, but it's been under restoration for some time. Where were the hubcaps? On the car when that picture was taken in April, 1963. They are currently packed away in a box, and are still virtually like new.

I'm not even sure what kind of shoes they are. Hush Puppies?

Happy B-day Duke and thanks again for all the time you devote to teaching pukes like me the basics.

                        Re: Happy Birthday Duke

Didn't everbody wear white socks to high school in 1963?

Within a week I realized the whitewalls were a BIG mistake, but it "self-corrected" when the General Jet-Aires chunked during my first day of hot lapping Kent a few months after the photo was snapped. So at 16 I became a "tire expert", and the three choices for a proper sports car tire were the Michelin X steel belted radial, the Pirelli Cinturato fabric belted radial, and the GY Bluestreak Sport Car Special, which was the (treaded) racing tire of the time and could be run on the street.

In my heart I wanted the Bluestreaks, but practicality - Seattle's rainy weather and the fact that I needed the new set of tires to last through college dictacted the Michelins, and I had no regrets. They delivered 47,000 miles including a least a half dozen days hot-lapping Kent, and I finally replaced them with a set of 205HR-15 fabric belted Pirelli Cinturados just before graduating from college in 1968. The wide Pirellis did not work well on the OE wheels, but a set of 7 inch '68 Corvette wheels did the trick.

Shortly thereafter I traversed the I-5 ship canal bridge at 150 MPH on the express lanes on the way back to the U-district from downtown late one night. That's why I special ordered it with a 3.08:1 axle and needed high speed tires. I like to go fast. REAL FAST - with miles of empty road in front of me - not just a quarter mile at a time. It could pull 5900-6000 revs in top gear.

The dealer was Alan Green Chevrolet and my dad and I had a meeting with Green to establish the deal. Don Campbell who was assigned to handle the transaction also attended the meeting. He co-drove Green's #7 Sting Ray at Sebring with Jerry Grant.

P.S. Thanks to Dave for reducing the scanned photo to a reasonable size and posting it.

I think they look like English band circa pointed toe tie shoes.

Yeah, they do look something like that, but doesn't April '63 predate Beatlemania and the pointy toe shoe thing? IIRC the Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show was sometime in 1964?
