C3 (69): Fuel guage acting strange

Today I've topped off my tank completely and my fuel guage read perfectly normal a bit more than full tank (1 o'clock). After driving 30 miles I noticed it was reading way to much (3 o'clock). I'm afraid something is wrong now but I've checked the back of the guage and all seems fine. Any clues or suggestions what is going on here and how to find the solution to this mistery?

    greetings,
    Rob.

    Rob------

The first thing that I would do is to check the connections at the tank gauge sending unit. There are TWO connections here that are important. One is a pin terminal connection at the "center" of the bottom of the sending unit. The other is a blade terminal connection nearer the periphery of the unit. This is the ground. BOTH of these connections must be tight and making good electrical contact. You will have to remove the spare tire and carrier to check all this. In particular, check for corosion on the ground blade terminal and connector which will increase electrical resistance.
