    Carter carb on a C2

Does anyone make a good "how-to" book on rebuilding Carter AFB carbs.....? The Carter carb on my '64 327/300 is leaking gas..... I know that I could send the carb out to a "specialist", but I would like to try rebuiliding it myself.....

Also, does anyone make a rebuild "kit" for this carb.....?

    Thanks....

leaking gas from where? Rebuild kits are readily available, try your local auto parts store, or eBay.

Yes, there are good books available for Carter carburetors. "Carter Carburetors" by Dave Emanuel is available through Motor Books of Osceola, WI. It may also be available through the NCRS bookstore. That's where I'd check first. Also, you can find rebuilding information in old editions of Motors Manual. Look for one published in the early to mid 60's.

As far as a kit goes, I believe that Borg-Warner Automotive still markets a carb rebuild kit for Carter AFB carbs. Federal-Mogul/Carter may, too. GM does not carry AFB kits as of the last 20 years, or so.

One of the issued that a professional rebuilder will deal with is looseness in the throttle shaft area, a repair that is not usually within the capabilities of the average do-it- yourselfer. If that is where your "leak" is coming from, a pro might be the best way to go.

I encourage you to rebuild it yourself. Not a big deal. The book on Carter carbs by Emmanuel is great, and is under $15 on Amazon. NCRS probably carries it too. AFBs are great carbs to rebuild. They're simple and straightforward.

There are rebuild kits everywhere. All the usual Corvette parts vendors carry them. Around $30. I'll bet your FLAPS has them too. They're also on EBay all the time. No special tools or techniques are required to do the rebuild.

When you rebuild the carb, there are 2 things you won't be able to do. First is the plating or coating of the body and air horn. In addition to making the carb look pretty, this process seals it. Where is your carb leaking? It's unlikely that it's leaking through the body metal. But if it is, the plating/coating will be necessary to seal the patch you'll need to make.

Second is the throttle shafts. You won't be able to ream and then insert bushings in the body where the throttle shafts pass through. If these things need rebushing, you would have noticed vacuum leaks and an idle spped that varied depending on how hard you slammed the throttle shut.

              Source for Rebuild Info

I've rebuilt several of these over the years. Every rebuild kit comes with its own set of instructions. But the ultimate AFB rebuild guide should already be on your book shelf. Try the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual, section 6M. There's a dozen pages of very detailed text and pictures.
