    C2 Speedometer Problems

When I bought my '65 Convertible (300Hp, Positraction, 4-Speed)the speedometer didn't work. Now the speedo cable has been changed but I'm facing the following problems:
    1. When accelrating the needle remains in its position. Only after driving constantly afterwards the needle goes up.
    2. The needle shows around 15 MPH too little.
At first I thought the speedometer would need to be recalibrated but I was told that this seems to be rather a mechanical problem. Could a wrong Speedo Drive Gear explain the 15 MPH discrepancy? But what could be the cause for the first problem? Any help is appreciated.

An incorrect gear in the transmission could cause the error in the speed indication. But if you replaced the cable and the speedometer is not showing a smooth and steady reading I would think your speedometer is in need of a rebuild. There are several vendors who rebuild the dash gages.

Try turning the speedometer cable from the transmission end with a variable speed drill, and see if you get a smooth needle. There is no mechanical connection between the cable and the needle shaft, just a magnet. I think it is a constant ratio between the cable rpm versus the needle reading, CCW looking at the rear of the speedometer.

At least you will find out whether it is the speedometer, or the transmission gear. I would suspect the speedometer, especially if it has never been overhauled and been in a moist environment. Happened to mine.
