    C2 66 Rocker Molding Screws

I mounted my 66 roadster NOS rocker moldings with the fasteners that came with the moldings. The bottom screws are Phillips pan head black oxide. The 66 JM states that these should be hex head screws. The 65 JM says either pan head or hex head screws. I called Long Island Corvette and asked if their screws for a 66 were hex head -- they replied no, they were black pan head just like the factory provided and that the NCRS JM was wrong. Can anyone confirm what is right?

    Thanks,
    Dave Kitch

Dave - The 66 TIM&JG is in err on the rocker molding screw head configuration. Black oxide, pan head Phillips screws are the ones. Long Island has gotten many call on this. Pete

Mine were chrome plated on a 67

with pan phillips head, no washer, and a blunt point. Even though the 67 JG says "pan head black phillips screws with flat washers".

I got dinged on this at judging, so I was careful to save the original screws I took off for the first time. Here's a comparison of the repros vs my originals:

The screw on the far left is a Paragon repro which meets the 67 JG.

The one right of it, is the original bottom screw from a never been taken off rocker panel. I even found the original paper tag on the back of the rocker panel which I carefully put back in position. all four screws were the same, and they are chrome plated. Couldn't believe it, they are still shiny. A zinc plated screw in that exposed position would have been filly corroded after 39 years.

Notice the blunt point and no washer.

On the far right are two original rocker panel side screws from the front on each side. Both of my rears were missing.

Left of the two on the right are Paragon repros. Zinc or chrome plated, not black phosphate as the JG says (but they are repros).

Notice the difference in size of the heads between the originals and the repros.
The originals are a #8x1" screw with a what is now a #6 head. The repro's are a #10 screw with what is now a #8 head. The originals don't look like they were black phosphated as the JG says. They look like the heads were dipped in black paint; I can see the the dip mark on the back of the head with the shaft being all rust. If that was black phosphate, it was a crummy job.

And I also found out why my two rears were missing. The original screws were not long enough to use a flat speed nut. They were just screwed into the fiberglass. I had to go back in with a #8X1-1/4" SS screw to replace them with a flat speed nut. (I am going paint the heads to match the panel and the original screws.)

So the Judging Guide is a guide only. I have a lot of things on my 6/29/67 car which are different then what the Judging Guide says.

Re: Mine were chrome plated on a 67

          Jerry -

Line repairmen used whatever was handiest or whatever screw "worked best" when chasing a repair, especially when it wasn't visible.

Were those screws used on a 68

            John,

Mine were all the same, all the way around on the rocker panels, on a late 67.
