More question 63 Console wiring

I appreciate all the responses from my previous post last week. I do have a wiring diagram. I'm having a little trouble tracing two wires. Both wires come off the left side of the harness and are relatively short..4-6 inches in length if that helps. Both wires have the push on female style (thin piece of brass inside a black housing).

1. Black with Green Stripe. I can't find this in any wiring diagram. The car is a FI with a buzzer alarm so I'm thinking it might be for that purpose however, I can't see that indicated in any of the diagrams. Any ideas where that might be? or where the buzzer would be? Someone told me it's not inside the tach. Is this correct?

2. Tan or possibly Brown? Again on the left side with same end. I'm thinking this might be for the radio capacitor connection but this is on the other side of the cluster??

Last question. Are the 5 screws holding the console in supposed to be machine stlye or sheet metal style for the "U" bolts? All the catalogs show machine style but mine (again early 63) are sheet metal??

John, the tan wire may be the horn wire. If it is, it will connect to the green wire coming off the steering column. The green wire is connected to a contact just above the upper steering column bearing.

It could and that's an excellent suggestion however that creates another question, I have a longer tan wire (coming off the left side) with a small metal U shaped clip that accepts the male plastic connection which is what I have coming down the steering column from the horn. I though the longer tan wire which has the larger female type plug goes to the horn...I could be wrong....?? Or maybe since it's a longer tan with a female plug, that goes to the radio capacitor connection on the other side near the ignition switch??

The five cluster attaching screws are 1/4"-20 machine threads; they're black oxide-coated oval head phillips machine screws. All the vendors have them, along with the "U"-nuts.

I have 63 SWC #3914 assembled the end of November 1962 and it has 5 sheet metal type screws. I think there may have been a running change during the 63 model year but I haven't checked the AIM and wouldn't swear to my car's originality in this area either.

But early 63's are sometimes a breed apart!!

Ok thanks. Not sure why anyone would change the "U" nuts?? I had 5 black oxide-coated oval head phillips sheet metal type screws. I was thinking it was possibly something they did on "early" 63s then maybe changed over to the 1/4"-20 machine threads later in 63??

Clearly there must be some change. Mine was assembled the first week of Nov which is earlier. 63s are a very strange year to restore that is for sure!

Tom,

You are correct. The 1st design screw in early 63 cars was indeed a self tapping thread with a black plated cross recess oval head.

The 2nd design was a medium/dark brown cross recess oval head machine screw.

I don't remember the exact month of change in production but November does sound right.

I don't think the day will ever come that we don't learn something new about these cars, especially that early 63 bunch. I've been all over these cars for many decades and I still learn something just about every day. Amazing the amount of hands on knowledge here on this board.

By the way, next January for the NCRS event, I'll meet you in Spring Hill in the 66. It's actually running and driving again after nearly 6 years and I've been terrorizing the community again. If you make it to town on Wednesday, we'll go to the local car show.

Can anyone post a good picture of these sheet metal screws? I would like to see if I still have the originals around. Is the "U" nut different for these sheet metal screws, and were they used to attach the glove box compartment also?

I'll post a picture in a few days if you can tell me where in the hell this Black Wire with a green strip goes :-) grin....sorry, I need to know and nobody seams to know...but basically, they look like the same sheet metal screws for the center console. Same taper. Same length. Just black oxide. Same U bolts you'll find everywhere else...
