have a 1968 427/390 hp. what is an acceptable running temp. when running at 55 or below temp stays at about 195, at highway speeds of 65-75 temp goes up to 210+ the most miles on a trip is 60-65 miles , could temp be higher if i drove further?? planning on long trip 220-250 miles. new water pump.(high flow) larger radiator ( clean) removed after market air cond. and condenser that was in front of radiator, no tag in front to block flow. is 210 - 220 temp ok to run?

I think that 210-220 is ok. Besides, most newer cars run at that temperature range. Of course, there are some material differences, but I think that 210-220 is ok for older cars, too. If you have a stock thermostat it will be a 195 degree unit. So, after warm-up, the thermostat won't let the temperature go below 195.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

210-220 is aceptable. Are you sure that the car is actually that hot? I have found that most of the guages are indicators only. Not very accurate. If you do not have one, borrow an non-contact infared thermometer and check the temperature at the thermostat housing. Compare with the indicated temp.
I have alway subscribed to the theory that as long as the radiator does not lose water, the temp is not too high. Hince, the need for a good radiator cap.Dick Whittington- Top
