    1963 Muncie Transmission help! Please

I replaced the NAPA clutch (earlier posting) with a LUK clutch today. The good news is that I now have adjustment for pedal travel. The bad news is that when I was hooking up the linkage to first and second gear shifter shaft and detent plate the threaded shaft snapped. It looked to be a very weak casting and I was only using light force with a box wrench. This is an original 1963 Muncie transmission (July car); is the shifter shaft the same with all year Muncies or am I into one of these one year only deals again. Can this part be installed with the transmission in the car or do I have to remove the transmission again?

    Thanks for any help!

    Ray------

The 1-2 and 3-4 shifter shafts for all 1963-68 Muncies were the same and were of GM #3831709. This style shifter shaft with male threaded ends was a "weak point" (as you've discovered). In 1969, Muncies changed to a female thread type of shifter shaft.

The GM #3831709 shifter shaft was discontinued more than 25 years ago. However, they may be available in the aftermarket and are certainly available used.

Actually, there were more than two variants, as the '63-64 used a 5/16 thread nut and the later versions used a shaft with flat sides that allowed a 3/8 nut to be used on the same levers. The '65 up is the one to use. Ebay usually has some, or email me off the board if you can't find any.

The shaft(s) can be changed by removing the side cover only. You do not have to remove the trans. Any of the available shafts will work, as long as you have the correct fastener for it.

I would like to confirm that I have installed the correct shifter shaft. The broken one looks like an eight 8 and is rough casting. The replacement is elliptical smooth machined shape with the flat sides on the threads and 3/8" nut.

Thanks to all for the help!
