    Dash Pad C-3 70-72

    Has anyone taking off the upper dash pad to get at the head light switch? are can you just pull the lower panel forward enough to get at the switch? if you take out the screws on the top pad what is holding it on in the back anyone know?

    Its held in by retaining clips across the bottom of the windshield. You can replace the switch both ways, but removing the top dash pad is the easier way. You'll need to remove the moldings across the top of the windshield and down the sides, then the pass side lower dash pad. Look for a bracket towards the center of the car that secures the top dash pad and remove the screw. Once that is done, you can slightly bend the top pad and remove it from the car.

      I change the headlight switch by lowering the steering column and removing all the screws from the LH dash panel. Just pull the LH side out to change the switch. The upper dash can crack when bent to remove as it can be a real tight fit also the windshield trim removal can find many rusted screws and stir up more problems.

          You NEED to follow the instructions for R&R of the instrument cluster listed in the Chassis Service Manual. If you don't you risk doing damage!

          The cluster will pull forward a SLIGHT amount (maybe an inch or two) once you've disconnected the speedo/tach cables and then 'hang'. That's because the main instrument wiring harness is held to the back side of the cluster by a flexible steel clip (located between speedo and tach).

          Attempts to pull it out further without gaining clearance by dropping the steering column as indicated in the CSM's R&R proceedures AND reaching behind the cluster to unclip the wiring harness will result in CUTTING into the wiring harness!
