    66 ammeter fixed!!!!

Ref. my posting below on an inoperative ammeter and the responses sent by members. I solved the problem with their help. I got under the hood this morning and pulled off the two connectors that go to the fuse box, on the engine side of the firewall. Lots of greenish corrosion and gunk. After I painted my car last winter I washed the engine compartment down and hosed everything multiple times. I should have cleaned the connectors at that time. Anyhow, I brushed them off rather lightly with a wire brush, reinstalled them and the ammeter works. I will wait for Spring for a more thorough cleaning. I plan on pulling the fuse box off the interior side of the firewall and cleaning those contacts too. Thanks again, Gary

    Hi Mr. Schisler!

A quick note: I found using a Dremel tool with the small cylindrical wire brush attachment works very well to clean the firewall plug contacts and the fusebox holders. Requires about 10 minutes. Be careful when removing the engine-side plugs as it is easy to break off the plastic locking tabs (at 30+ years old). Try not to bend the triangular-shaped connectors very much as the contract relies on an interference fit. Also, I would reccomend using a conductive silicone grease to lightly lue the terminals to try to prevent future corrosion.

I believe there may be a replacement fusebox terminal kit available if yours is quite badly corroded.

(Aren't you glad this was the extent of the problem? I never seem to be so lucky...)

Thanks for the input. I will try some of the conductive grease. I am quite happy that this fix turned out to be an easy one. However, in my 6+ years in this hobby, I haven't had too many that were easy. They usually required 3 hands, lots of donated skin or other body parts, hours and hours to fix, and plenty of money.
