    LUK Clutch

I am about ready to replace a new NAPA clutch with a new LUK clutch in my 63 340HP project. This will be the first time I have changed a clutch with the body on. Is there any clearance or other problems that I will be facing. I will have the 63 up on a two post lift with the engine supported with a stand. I would like to insure it is a smooth change. I do not want to leave the car on the lift with a stand under the engine for any extended time. The main reason for the change is pedal travel, NAPA informed me that they have had this problem before and that I would have to play or modify the bell housing fork stud.

    Thanks Ray #36314

    Re: LUK Clutch

In my experience it's virtually impossible to pull the transmission far enough to the rear to fully withdraw the input shaft from the bell housing window.

The workaround is to remove the bellhousing bolts after the trans is pulled back and lower both the bellhousing and trans simulataneously. Of course, two or three extra sets of hands will help for this operation.

When the clutch is out, place it on a flat surface and measure the distance between the friction surface and the diaphragm spring ends that the release bearing bears against. It should be about the same as what is installed. Also measure the length of the new release bearing relative to what is installed.

Both measurements, or at least the sum of both measurements should be the same for the new parts as the currently installed parts.

      Ray....about that kit

I also am looking at the same job. There is a seller on EBAY (Hiteparts) who sells the kit for $110 (Pep Boys $170). I am tempted but have read it is helpful to buy from a local shop in case things dont work out.

Also, there is some debate as to the fit of the pilot bearing with LuK supplies. See archives for post (Tim Bond March 16, 2006...Clutch replacement lessons).

I am a bit confused though in his post. He states the correct OD should be 1.094". LuK spec is 1.0945. Seems the bearing is correct size. Maybe someone will help us with this conundrum.

to r&r trans remove trans mount from trans, remove trans mount bracket from frame, remove shifter, drive shaft etc, roll trans on it's side,if you still have a bell housing clearance problem lower the motor and inch or enough to clear the trans input, this has worked for me on 67's with bb & sb.

What about left exhaust pipe? I was led to believe that it has to be removed in order for trans to roll out left side.

            Re: Ray....about that kit

            Hi! Jim

I purchased a LUK clutch kit from our local transmission shop for $136.00. You may be able to go on to the LUK web site and find a local distributor in your area. I hope to change mine this weekend, so thanks to all for the information!
