My 66 coupe driver's side door will not fully release when pulling the inside knob. Apparently the "throw" is not quite long enough to fully release the latch. Works fine from the outside. Does anyone know of a "fix" for this condition.

Re: 66 Driver Door Proble
It should just be a matter of adjusting the little "X" shaped mechanism and it's attached hardware from inside the door. When I painted my 66 convertible last winter, I completely disassembled the door components and had to adjust it all when it got put back together. There isn't much room for adjustment at the "X" shaped mechanism (try sliding the "X" mechanism aft towards the rear), but the adjustment is made at the linkage and the connectors and at the door hardware itself. All of these need to be attacked from the inside. There are three levers, or rods, attached to the door and lock mechanism: one is from the outside lock, one is from the door knob on the inside, and one is from the inside door lock. The door mechanism is held in place by three screws. I would loosen these screws and trying moving the lock mechanism to the left or right, partially securing it and seeing if that is enough. This is one of those trial-and-error things. Once you start playing with the door lock, it becomes obvious how the whole thing goes together and works. I realize that this is kind of a generic assist on your door problem, but short of taking your door panel off myself, it is about as detailed as I can get. Good luck. Gary- Top

Re: 66 Driver Door Proble
I agree with Gary and would suggest you also check for looseness in the inner door release mechanism. I used brass shim stock to slide between the two arms on one of mine. Also check to be sure the long wire rod has the correct bends and is the right length. If it is too long it wont pull the lock open.- Top

Re: 66 Driver Door Proble
I had this exact problem on my '66. Well at least the symptoms were the same. It appeared as if I wasn't getting enough travel from the rods and levers in the lock mechanism. I tried adjusting everything and it got a little better but not what I would call fixed. Taking out the lock mechanism, I could see that there was wear on the ends of the levers that are used by the inside hand release so I built a shim to slide over one of the levers. This helped but I still wasn't satisified so the lock came out again. I soaked it in degreaser till it was clean and then started playing with the action of the mechanism. It turned out that the bearing surface where one of the shafts that supports a rotating part that goes in the mechanism was worn out. I took the shaft out and replaced it with a screw and nut. Kind of like the bearings in a clock only they didn't use a bearing on the lock just a slip fit.Tom Brady- Top
