    Ok here is what I found looking at the out side of my 71 LS-5 block. the block has two holes in it by the oil filter, the one has a pipe plug in it, the other has threads in it but no plug. on the inside when I went through the engine it had a set of studs and a tray that fit on them, also this thing had the large push rods? and I was the first person inside that motor since it left the plant. no one else had been in it! so is it a odd ball? I think so.

    also this is a 512 block if you want I will get the cast date.

      lyndon, my LS5 has the studs with the plate in the oil pan area. The holes in the side of the block where the oil filter is usually indicates a 4 bolt main block for the higher HP version. Does yours have 4 bolt main caps? I am not an expert on these but have just finished researching my engine and that is what I was told regarding the 512 block with the holes on the side. On my block there is just the casting bosses where they would drill and tap the holes. Hope this helps. Yes if it is a 4 bolt I would think it is an odd one. Sheldon

        my block has 4-bolt and the good crank. also the block has the holes in it with a pipe plug in one an allen set screw in the other. I think what they did was yank a HP block that day for what ever reason and use it for a LS-5. I am going to get the casting numbers later and we might be able to tell when this happend. if others will come forward with info on there blocks
