    late 50's wheel covers

Will 1957 wheel covers fit on 1958 wheels (15x5.5)?

The covers were stolen off of my 58 and I haven't been able to find reasonably priced replacements. I have access to a set of excellent condition 1957 covers but I won't spend the money if they won't fit my 58 wheels.

      Mathew----

Well here I go again getting into an area that I don't know very well, but I'll offer this:

As far as I know, the 57 and 58 Corvette 15 X 5.0 wheels (standard wheels) are the same. These were GM #3714744. These wheels accomodate the full wheel covers, for sure.

Also, as far as I can tell, the 57 and 58 Corvette 15 X 5.5 wheels were the same. These were GM #3748348. These wheels, I believe, will accept only the smaller hub caps, but I am not certain.

In any event, the point is that if your car and the 57 which donated the wheel covers which you are looking at have the same width wheels, the wheel covers should fit. On the other hand, if the 57 had the 5.5" wide wheels and the smaller covers, I don't know why you'd want to use those. There were very few Corvettes made in 57 and 58 that had the 5.5" wheels.

Hopefully, one of the C1 afficionados on the board like Dale Pearman will be able to correct this information and provide more.

Matthew, 56 thru 58 used the same cover and the only change in 59 was the addition of slots arround the edge of the cover to let the small rocks out. An adittional point to note is that all pre-59 wheels should have little pieces of rubber hose stuffed in the gap between the spider and the rim to keep the rocks out since once in they had no way to get out! Rocks,eh!

And I always thought the slots were to allow additional cooling air to those hot wheels and drums. Oh well, they sure look cool!
