66 Powerglide leak

I have finally developed a good leak at the gear selector shaft seal (original) on my 66 powerglide. My question is how to change the seal? Does the pan have to be dropped and the shaft removed from the inside? Any major disassembly required?

Yes but it's simple and then you can replace the filter ( good service time)

The seal can be changed from the outside, if you have the special tool for it. Otherwise, you can remove the pan, and there is a nut that holds the "rooster comb" onto the shaft. Once you have the shaft out, you can use a screwdriver to remove the seal. The new seal can be installed with a 9/16" socket as a driver(installation tool)
