    Cleaning White Vinyl Seats...

I have a 58,000 mile '67 with white and blue interior and the white seats and door panels are a little yellow looking and dirty in the grain etc. Can anyone recommend a good cleaning product please? Thanks, Mark

I also have used hand cleaner (gojo) with an old tooth. After clean then apply some Loxol to keep it soft. Have no idea if such is alright for the vinyl. If anyone has expert advice hope they post.

------Vinyl, as it is produced, has some type of clear protective coat. That protective coat can be damaged by too agressive a cleaner. Once removed the affected panels will get dirty faster and will also turn color due to fading. It sounds as if thats what you may be faced with. Taking that orange off may be difficult and it will certainly return and return quickly. In the past, I have resorted to redying interior pieces to which this has happened. With that said, I have never had to redye seats, only door-panels. Seats obviously flex way more than door-panels and redyeing possibly should be done by an expert if at all. As far as type of cleaner, make sure it isnt too strong and do small areas (6 to 8 inchs) at a time. Dont let the cleaner sit on the seats for too long a period. No brush other than a tooth brush should be used. Hope this helps.........Bill S

I use a mild cleaner/soap to get the majority of the dirt. Then apply a generous amount of baby oil, working it into the seams and around the hardware. Then go over the areas again with a clean cloth. The additional amount of soil removal surprised me, as I was skeptical. Try a small area first or around a seam, to determine if you like the look. My forty-year-old vinyl is looking pretty good. The result on leather is inconsistent.
I also apply it to the tires/white walls after using lacquer thinner to remove the brown molding residue.

                Mark,

The advice about using products that aren't too strong is sound (as it is with any cleaning), but sometimes an item has been let go too long and only strong chemicals will work. I owned a '75 Firebird with white vinyl seats and they got dirty very easily. Eventually, products like soaps, etc weren't able to clean them, particularly high contact spots like the ridges and piping. I used to use a product called "Fantastick" spray and a toothbrush and followed-up with an application of "The Tannery" vinyl dressing. It worked like its name: fantastically! Over time, however, the Fantastick obviously dried-out and perhaps even deteriorated ("ate") the vinyl, and I eventually suffered tears in the seat cushions.

Thus the advice to go as gently as possible in cleaning...

                  Mark,

-----The reason the baby oil works for you is that you are returning a protective coat of something to the vinyl. It is only temporary and probably as you know needs to be refreshed often. Thats not a big deal, I guess, but only a temporary solution. Dont get me wrong, other than replacement Im not sure there is a permanent solution. Im prone to thinking that baby-oil being a petroleum (???) product will break down the vinyl over a period of time, although Im less than 100% sure on that..........Bill S

The most inexpensive oils list mineral oil and fragrance as ingredients. So an improvement would be to add a UV block. It seems to clean well, my hands feel great, and smell is OK too.
