    C2 Steering Box #

I am about to restore a long awaited 65 sb, ps roadster. I have three steering boxes I have accumulate. Can anyone tell me if any of the following #'s boxes are correct for that car? 5677649....35176...or 02479? I cant find information.

    Thanks

    Here's from a late '65

looks like 5677649. The '65 Chev parts catalog says 5677642.

      Jack,
I'm not sure about your numbers, but my original '65 has steering box 5666723 54 installed. Hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Gene

        Re: Ignore previous post

        Jack,
Please ignore number listed above. It is the number from the steering box cover. It's too early in the morning.

Confirm your cover #'s (other cover details)

Gene -- was also much too early out west in the Mountain Time zone -- forgot to flip the box image top-to-bottom for ease of reading the number.

Here's a shot of the cover. Note that this late '65 car has "55" instead of your 54 -- probably a mold or rev. #. Note the "NAT" grade 5 hex-head bolts, and if you look closely, remnants of yellow paint show to the upper left of the "fill" bolt.

But what I'd never noticed before is the symbol to the lower left of the part #; the same pie-segmented circle that we see on the inner side of one of the ears on original K.O. spinners. So maybe the same manufacturer made these covers and the spinners.

Wayne I might be wrong but I suspect that symbol (sort of a wagon wheel) to the lower left you refer to may be the Central Foundry logo.

Regardless of which box you use check the side play in the bushings. Using a rebuild kit with the kit bushings will only cut the play down to about .005" for a much better setup machine and fit bushings for .002-.003max. I do this on all the boxes I blueprint and it does make a difference. Hopefully the gears are still good too as these are getting harder to find and the price as gone up.
Be sure to get the lash screw slot gap under .002" and check it with a dial torque wrecnh for lash and preload settings.
